Behind the Scenes

I shot these in a “tow pen” off the coast of Turkey in the Mediterranean.  There were hundreds of fish in the net and a few were over 500 pounds.  Two fish were between 900 and 1,000 pounds!  Fish this large are rare now and most in this net were under 50 pounds.  The eastern Atlantic strain of the bluefin tuna spawn in the Mediterranean and this is where they are targeted by the commercial fisheries.  This population is crashing.  The fish are being taken at 3 times more than the scientific community reccomendation for sustainablity.
